Tepeyac Community Health Center Vaccinates Nearly 600 Residents in a Single Mobile Vaccine Event!

On Monday, November 15th, more than 500 people received their COVID-19 and flu shots through the CDPHE vaccine mobile clinic. The large turnout was due to the continuous effort of Tepeyac Community Health Center to educate residents in the Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea (GES) neighborhoods about the importance of getting vaccinated.

Tepeyac Community Health Center provides high-quality, accessible health care services to underserved residents in Denver. Most recently, Tepeyac staff and community partner, CREA Results, went door-to-door, with Jim Garcia, Tepeyac’s CEO and founder. They had conversations with hundreds of GES residents who were hesitant about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Their efforts paid off.

With 542 COVID-19 vaccine and 59 Flu shots administered, Tepeyac reached its highest number of vaccinated individuals in a single clinic event in 2021.

“It was a powerful experience to be able to interact directly with our neighbors and have a dialogue about the effectiveness of the vaccine. The important lesson here was that there is no substitute for these types of one-on-one conversations.”  - Jim Garcia

Since the approval and availability of COVID-19 vaccines, Tepeyac has held nearly 30 vaccine events (21 in the last three months alone) in and around the GES communities. According to statistics by Bloomberg Graphics, Hispanics currently account for only 38.1% of the known vaccinated population in the United Stated. By focusing on these neighborhoods, Tepeyac is meeting people where they live, making both the vaccine and information about it accessible.

In this door-to-door campaign, Tepeyac knocked on 3,371 houses, built rapport and trust through face-to-face conversations with a total of 1,559 community members (more than half identify as Latino or Hispanic), and recorded 845 vaccinations at neighborhood sites.

In addition to community vaccine events, Tepeyac has hosted drive-thru vaccine clinics and COVID-19 testing for patients and non-patients alike with and without appointments.

Tepeyac is currently offering the Moderna COVID vaccine to individuals over 18 years old and the Pfizer COVID vaccine to individuals over 5 years old. Moderna and Pfizer booster shots are also available for those who are eligible per the State of Colorado eligibility criteria.
