David Ocelotl Garcia's Latest Mural Honors Tepeyac Community Health Center’s History at RiNo Art Park

Now in its 27th year, Tepeyac Community Health Center is being creatively recognized through a vibrant narrative via a mural on Denver’s newest RiNo Art Park in the heart of Denver.

Tepeyac Community Health Center’s roots were established in 1993 when members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, located in one of Denver’s working-class and predominantly Latino neighborhoods, decided to address a problem they saw firsthand: the lack of affordable and culturally responsive health care for medically under-served individuals and families. Fast forward more than 25 years – from what started as a two exam-room clinic in a small, renovated North Denver bungalow, to what is now a well-established, community health center located in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood. Tepeyac's current location holds 11 exam rooms, 5 counseling rooms, and a variety of services ranging from primary care, behavioral health, dental, pediatrics, and HIV services. In October of 2020, construction began on a much larger clinical facility in Denver’s Elyria neighborhood, which will eventually triple the current capacity.

David Ocelotl Garcia, a Denver native, was commissioned by Olive, a healthcare technology company based out of Ohio, to commemorate Tepeyac’s long-standing commitment to providing high quality and culturally responsive healthcare services to the community. “We are incredibly honored to have an artist of David’s caliber tell Tepeyac’s story”, said Jim Garcia, Tepeyac Community Health Center’s founder and CEO. “We are also especially grateful to our friends at Olive for making this mural possible.”

Ocelotl Garcia’s artistic talent will be on full display with this rendering of Tepeyac’s history in a 80 x 8 foot mural that highlights the grassroots origins of Tepeyac Community Health Center.

Ocelotl Garcia’s work can be seen in museums, public art commissions, and private collections. His work is currently featured at the newly opened Meow Wolf venue.

Ocelotl Garcia is scheduled to complete and unveil Tepeyac's mural during the three-day community celebration and official opening of the RiNo Art Park from September 24th- 26th by the Denver Public Art Programs.
